About Policy Compass
Policy Compass is an independent publication that explains auto and home insurance in plain English. We want to help you understand what you're buying, ask your insurer or agent better questions, and avoid surprises when you file a claim.
What we cover
- Auto insurance: coverage types, liability limits, deductibles and how to choose how much coverage to carry.
- Home insurance: what a homeowners policy covers, common exclusions and how claims settle.
- Bundling: how multi-policy discounts work and how to compare a bundle with separate policies.
- Claims: step-by-step guides to filing and following up on car and home claims.
How we write
- We explain concepts, not personal recommendations. Insurance rules vary by state, insurer and policy form, so we focus on the questions to ask and the terms to look for in your own documents.
- We cite sources. When an article relies on a figure, rule or definition, we link to where it came from. We prefer state insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and other consumer resources.
- We don't invent numbers. If we don't have a reliable source for a figure, we leave it out.
- We update. Each article shows when it was published and last updated. If you spot something out of date or wrong, please tell us.
What we are not
We are not an insurance company, agent or broker. We don't sell policies, collect quote requests or rank insurers. Nothing on this site is financial, legal or insurance advice. See our disclaimer for details.
Who writes the guides
Articles are written and reviewed by the Policy Compass editorial team.
